I have been taking each of my Mandarin lessons i’ve recorded into Garageband to add chapter markers so I can listen to it on my iPod and skip between the topics. It’s really cool.
As for the actual recordings I noticed i have some bad background noise in my recordings from the Putonghua class I have – air conditioners and hiss etc..
I’ve found a few tools that seem to be getting a bit of a result. “Speech enhancer” & “AUGraphicEQ”
Speech Enhancer is some sort of noise filter – not a lot of buttons to push – but I will experiment a little more
AUGraphicEQ – there is a fair amount of low frequency rumble and high frequency hiss – this seems to have knocked that back a lot – but i am losing a bit – once again i’ll experiment a little more.
In my travels to find a way to get rid of it I found this good article on some audio basics for Garageband / recording / mixing
“Giles Turnbull has already written an introduction to the basics of GarageBand, for those who have recently joined the world of digital recording. In this article, I’ll assume that you’ve already recorded your tracks, and/or used the pre-recorded loops, to assemble the basic parts of your song.”

THANK YOU SO MUCH! THIS MADE MY RECORDING SO MUCH CLEARER!
I, too, am having a big background noise problem. I am able to find SpeechEnhancer and AUGraphiceq as you suggested, but then I don’t know how to apply it to my track. Or maybe it IS applied to my track and it’s just not doing anything. I’m still very new to Garage Band and have just taken the online tutorials, so any help you could offer would be great. The problem is that I can’t record it again because it was recorded by a colleague who has left the office. Any ideas?
I too cannot find AUGraphicEQ in Garageband 11. I have searched the internet to find how to access this and have had no luck. If someone could give a step-by-step instruction on how to access this I would be very grateful.
Hey Drew,
I’m running Garageband ’08, so not sure if this will help, but in the main window where I monitor my recording I have a split window, on the tool bar of the lower window there is the letter “i” in a circle which is in a square which is beside another square button that has a graphic of a filmstrip, picture and musical notes.
Click on the “i” and a sidebar opens. Select Podcasting: Male Narrator (or whatever you need) then click on Details at the bottom of that sidebar and you will see “Effects”. Start selecting these drop down menus and you will find Speech Enhancer and AUGraphicEQ. FYI: they had NO effect on my recording. I’m trying to make a podcast and I finally have my voice where I want it, but with terrible background hiss. I have no idea how to eliminate this crap.
what does noisegate do? does that help at all??
Do the “effects” like Speech enhancer, etc. have to be set before you record, or can they be changed and saved after you record? Thanks
anyone can help me where i can find the AUGraphicEQ or Speech enhancer
help me please……..
